MIX-MIX: The Filipino Adventures of a German Jewish Boy

The Latino Theater Company teams up with Playwrights’ Arena to present 'MIX-MIX: The Filipino Adventures of a German Jewish Boy,' a WWII play inspired by the true-life experiences of Ralph J. Preiss. This gripping narrative tells the coming-of-age tale of 13-year-old Rudy Preissman, who flees Nazi Germany at the age of nine with his family in search of safety in the Philippines. However, their tropical sanctuary is disrupted when Japan invades the islands, compelling the family and their Filipino companions to seek refuge in the heights and depths of sacred Mount Banahao.

FilAm Arts presents a pre-reception sponsored by Island Pacific and a talk back presented by NBC Launch.

Join us on Sunday, May 19 at 3pm, Show at 4pm and Panel Discussion immediately following the performance with the writer, director and cast.

4 for 20 with Daniel Corral

4 for 20 with Daniel Corral

Filipino-American artist Daniel Corral shares his deep listening concert at the beautiful FCCLA cathedral in Koreatown.

4 for 20 is a contemplative study of the physicality of sound, written for four musicians playing a 20-note set of just intonation chimes. The harmonic relations of a series of gradually changing chords are reflected in shifting polyrhythms connected to the frequency of each chime. 4 for 20 was originally inspired by hearing the bells of a midnight mass in a hamlet in Tuscany, which seemed to ring on forever. In 4 for 20, the slow-motion invocation of the physicality of sound became an invitation to re-inhabit presence in time.

Daniel Corral is a mixed heritage Filipino-American composer/performer born and raised in Eagle River, Alaska. Based in Los Angeles since 2005, his creative practice draws inspiration from Marshall McLuhan’s definition of art as “exact information of how to rearrange one’s psyche in order to anticipate the next blow from our own extended faculties.” This manifests via combinations of pop culture and experimental music conceptual rigor; unique instrumentation; performances in outdoor and/or public spaces; microtonality; consideration of the relational values of performances; and pieces that address current issues.

Mag-Usap Monday: Re-imagining the Concept of Conservatism and Mental Health in The Filipinx American Community

Mag-Usap Monday: Re-imagining the Concept of Conservatism and Mental Health in The Filipinx American Community

Date / Time: Monday 3/11 at 3-4 pm Pacific

This Mag-Usap Monday will include a discussion on ideas about conservatism, depression, trauma. How is our community conceptualizing these terms? There will be a brief discussion on Dr. Donna Demanarig’s current research on Filipinx Americans regarding conservatism, colonial mentality and mental health (e.g., preliminary findings). Implications of this study on community work and mental health will be explored in addition to sharing of how we practice self-care.

Register for this free workshop at bit.ly/magusapmondays and meals are provided for free.

Location: Hybrid - Online on Zoom and In-person at HiFi Collective at 3200 W. Temple St. STE 100, Los Angeles, CA 90026

Guest Speaker: Dr. Donna Demanarig (she/her/siya), Assistant Teaching Professor, Clinical Psychology, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth

Bio: Dr. Donna Demanarig is an ethnically Filipinx American with both Indigenous and colonizer ancestries. She has ancestors from Spain and China. She also comes from the Bagóbo Tagabawa and Dyangan tribe in Mindanao, Philippines. As she continues to witness the pain and suffering of her people and relatives from other marginalized and minoritized communities due to systemic oppression and white supremacy, she has used her pain and frustration to be an accomplice in improving our communities in academia and in our field of psychology. One of her sheroes, Audre Lorde, articulated this anger best when she stated, “My anger has meant pain to me, but it has also meant survival, and before I give it up, I’m going to make sure that there is something at least as powerful to replace it on the road to clarity.” As a teacher, her pedagogy centers around decolonizing, antiracist, and inclusive lenses. She is honored to have the opportunity to cultivate that student-mentor relationship and to foster spaces for students who don't generally find college classrooms as places to which they belong. Additionally, part of her journey to giving back to her community is by intentionally using her scholarship to not only advance the field of psychology to a more just and inclusive worldview but to also serve. As a scholar-activist, she is dedicated to using her scholarship to collaborate with and benefit communities of color. She continues to channel her frustration towards systemic oppression by making good, necessary trouble in her role as a teacher, scholar, and as a leader. We should not have to look to our oppressors to seek validation; let us shift the atmosphere and heal and thrive like the powerful and strong community that we are. Isang Bagsak.

JOSE MANUEL “CHEL” DIOKNO

Following the People Power revolution in 1986, Filipino-American physician Ruben Mallari proposed the creation of a memorial dedicated to people who opposed the Marcos dictatorship.

In response the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Memorial Foundation was organized 37 years ago to honor the heroes and martyrs who did not survive to witness their sacrifices valorized by the EDSA People Power Revolution.

Attorney Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno is the Board chairman of Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation. The Bantayogng mga Bayani (Monument of Heroes) – a monument wall and sculpture, a museum, and a research center –honors the martyrs and heroes of the struggle against the Marcos dictatorship. Chel is the son of the esteemed late Senator Jose W. Diokno, the “Father of Human Rights” in the Philippines. Like his father, he rose to prominence as an advocate for human rights, judicial reforms, and social justice. Chel is committed to pass on this legacy – forged by the sacrifices and struggles of those who resisted the martial law dictatorship – to present and future generations of Filipinos. Chel is the founding Dean of the De La Salle (DLSU) College of Law and Chair of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG). He has over 30 years’ experience as a human rights advocate, litigator, author, and educator. The DLSU College of Law is the first law school in the Philippines to include human rights and legal aid training in its curriculum. Chel has taught scores of government and private lawyers, law students and paralegals. He has published several law books, authoring chapters on human rights in textbooks. As a human rights lawyer with FLAG, Chel has represented countless fisherfolk, students, teachers, workers, journalists, soldiers, informal settlers, indigenous peoples, whistleblowers and other victims of abuse. He has defended the people with the least access and financial resources to have equal justice and protections under the law.
