Happy Filipino-American History Month! We are hosting the 8th Annual Katipunan Poetry Slam (KPS) in Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles! This invitational slam has poets competing for $500, $250, and $100 cash prizes. All ages are welcome.

Competitors: Ashley C. Lanuza, Jaime Estepa, Jade Phoenix Martinez, Janelle Paule, Kirby Marquez, Lourdes Marie Gan, Marc Josef Cid, Ren Cahigas, Soul Stuf, and TJ Simba-Medel

Hosted by Arianna Basco and Eddy M. Gana Jr. Food and drinks by HiFi Kitchen and music by DJ Ladybug. $10-15 suggested donation. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Co-sponsored by Get Lit, Sampaguita Press, and Palms Up Academy.

For Filipinos, the modern day poetry slam is an echo of the balagtasan—a poetic, political debate. The Katipunan were the revolutionary group in the Philippines who fought for independence against Spanish colonization in the 1890s. In honor of this history, the KPS provides a platform for Filipino poets to channel the fighting spirit of our ancestors in this celebration of free speech, and celebration of us.

Get your tix today. We hope to see you!
